Cut the Cord

Lyrics

I feel the mother pushing on all sides of me
Dying to give birth to a new humanity
One so full of love, and remembering of simple ways
Her wails will carry us through if we can just stay awake

We are the midwives the bringers of the dawn
We have no pull but to walk the path we’re on
To keep ourselves upright in the darkest hour
Holding love to the ground is our only power
We must breathe deep, we’ve got to pull it through
Holding onto life until there’s nothing left to do

Fierce with conviction, fierce with prayer
Fierce with compassion, we’re almost there
But don’t fall asleep until the work is complete
In the end there can be a heaven on Earth
A whole new chapter to our story
Don’t drop the pen until we’re living the glory
And even then, there’ll be more work to do
So surrender to service and just say Thank You...

Our souls will guide, so much wisdom inside
We feel ourselves falling, there’s hands by our side
Catching ourselves coming out of this womb
Cradling life because we know it is good....

And let the light break through, let the light break through, let the light break through, let the light break through

And cut the umbilical chord to anything that does not serve you anymore
And I cut the umbilical chord to anything that does not serve me anymore
And I cut the umbilical chord, I cut the umbilical chord, I cut the umbilical chord, I cut the umbilical chord
Cut the umbilical chord to anything that does not serve you anymore

I feel the mother pushing on all sides of me
Dying to give birth to a new humanity
One so full of love, and remembering of simple ways
Her wails will carry us through if we can just stay awake

Story

Cut the Chord was written with the inspiration of sacred plant medicine. This visionary sacred medicine and ceremony showed me that our world is in the birth canal right now, and we are like mothers giving birth, we are like midwives in the darkness of the night, pushing hard to bring through a new life. The metaphor of birth seems incredibly appropriate, given that this is a time of great pain and so much potential. We are living in intense times, and it is important that we know that.

This song is about staying awake for the pain. Staying the course. This song is about the better world we know is possible. This song is about cutting the metaphoric umbilical chord on that which no longer serves our growth as human beings.
