Take Back the Night

Lyrics

I do not give up
I do not raise my children to continue the evil of this world
You cannot take from me my Spirit
You grab it, you feel it, I take it back, take it back
Uninvited man abusing power
This was never yours to have
Turning love into violence,
where is your conscience
This was never yours to have
I will not now or never raise my gun in the name of revenge
I am rising reborn
Stronger than before, I call upon my brothers and sisters to stand

Take back the night by loving the children well
Take back the night by holding our prayers
Take back the night by screaming this wounding
Take back the night by the ancient moon lairs
Take back the night by holding her womb tight
Take back the night by sharing her story
Take back the night by giving birth to a world where this can never happen again

Unacceptable, unacceptable, unacceptable
Unacceptable, unacceptable, unacceptable

I take back the night I take back the night I take back the night
I take it back x.4

Take back the night by kneeling upon the Earth
Take back the night by knowing her worth
Take back the night by seeing me with your eyes
Take back the night by standing when violence arise
Take back the night by growing community
Take back the night by shedding my apathy
Take back the night by giving birth to a world where this can never happen again

Unacceptable, unacceptable, unacceptable
Unacceptable, unacceptable, unacceptable

I take back the night I take back the night I take back the night
I take it back x.4

Story

This song is the hardest to write about. The lyrics say a lot already. What I will share about this song is that it came from a place of great rage and grief around an act of sexual violence that was committed against one of my girlfriends. I was shaking and screaming when I heard the news. I felt uncontrollable anger- how could a human being do such a thing to another human being. As I went through the waves of feeling, I knew the only place that could hold this intensity was the Mother Ocean. I packed my day bag and guitar, and sat on a windy cliff for the next few hours, receiving this song in one fell swoop from the Fierce Protector Spirit of the Great Mother.

We will NOT be silenced
We will NOT be tamed
We will NOT be shamed
This is not just my sister's trauma to hold, this is all of ours to hold.
We will NOT be ruined
Our trust will NOT be broken
We are strong, we are powerful, together we sing, together we stand.

Take back the night.
